You might be new to the terminology called ‘Pipeline’ but you might be very much familiar with the concept of pipelines. We come across the need to carry countless things from one place to another – this is exactly the concept of pipelines in layman terms. Let’s learn about the formal definition of the pipeline. It is a line of channels or pipes or simply the method to carry goods from one place to another.
As the name suggests, a pipeline consists of several components including pipes, valves and joints, pumps, storage facilities, flowmeters, intake and outlet structures, cables, computers and a few more. In order to understand the role of these components, we first need to understand different types of pipelines.
Types of pipelines
The right tool is of utmost importance when you are planning to do any job in the most efficient manner. This is true even in the case of pipelines. It doesn’t matter if you are looking for pipeline services for pipe transport, log transport or something else. A pipeline built with good quality products would be able to do the service properly.
For a naive person, every pipeline would look the same from the outside. However, different types of pipelines are made of different materials to perform different types of jobs. Let’s look into a few of the major types of pipelines being used today:
- Cast iron pipeline – This one is made mainly of cast iron. Coatings and linings are done to make them corrosion-free as cast iron tends to catch corrosion quickly. Suitable mostly to transport gas, water and sewage from one place to another, cast iron pipelines are the most common type of pipeline.
- Water pipeline – These pipes are made of ductile iron, steel and concrete. Their primary job is to transfer water to the site where building constructions take place from the treatment plants. These pipes are usually installed just a few meters away from the construction site. Extra protection is required to protect them from accidents as even a minor leak in the pipe can cause severe water damage to the land at construction sites.
- Plastic pipelines – Similar to water pipelines, even these are used to transport water from one place to another. However, the difference is plastic ones are used for channeling water over long distances. These are easy to handle due to their lightweight.
- Petroleum oil pipeline – Crude oil and product pipelines are two of the major types of petroleum oil pipelines. Crude oil ones are used to transport crude oil to refineries while product ones are used to carry gasoline to the market. Petroleum oil pipelines are made of steel and have an external coating to make them resistant to corrosion.
- Gas pipeline – These are used to transport natural gas over land. Using the traditional methods of trains and trucks to carry natural gas usually comes expensive. Therefore, gas pipelines are highly being used in the market today to get the job done in an effective and efficient manner.
Knowing different types of pipelines can help you understand the best one suitable for your job. You may want to contact Ship a Car, Inc for pipe transporting services.
